Pablo Markaide is carrying out his PhD at the University of the Basque Country, where he studied Biology (undergraduate) and also holds a M.Sc. in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine (1-year). His first experiences of research as biology student were in the Animal Physiology Laboratory, focused on the energetic physiology of sea water bivalves, measuring biochemical contents of vascular plant detritus and the enzymatic activity of digestion in cockles.

After finishing his degree he started working in the Genetic Laboratory, participating in the discovery of new sequences for population genetics in anchovy, hare and tuna, eventually defending his M.Sc. with his work on tuna (Thunnus alalunga) sequences. Due to this dual experience, he obtained a grant from the Basque Government to discover genes related to growth in the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) using RNA-seq and this is his actual PhD research topic under the supervision of Dr. Andone Estonba and Dr. Enrique Navarro.

Following a postgraduate stay at the Oberta University in Catalunya (subject: Bioinformatics), he is now involved in the analysis of data created by Next Generation Sequencing technologies in anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) and Manila clam. His main research interests are: gene expression, physiology of growth in bivalves, nutrition and metabolic pathways in animals, SNP and population genetics in sea fish species and bioinformatics.
