Jorge Langa graduated in Mathematics at the University of Zaragoza and obtained two MScs, one in Modeling and Simulation by the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour and the other in BIoinformatics and Computational Biology by the Complutense University of Madrid, spending a summer for the Master’s thesis at the Université d’Aix-Marseille. With a PhD grant from the Basque Government, he is developing computational methods to study the genetic relationships between Clupeiformes: anchovies, herrings, sardines, and the like. These species are important due to their nutritional and economic value, and are under threat due to overfishing and global warming. Among other projects, he has participated in the analysis and development of SNP markers for Tinca tinca, a species important in aquaculture both in Europe and China; the detection of selective sweeps in three sheep breeds exclusive to the Basque Country; and the development of Machine Learning methods for the classification and prediction of honeybee populations from sequencing and genotyping data.
