Bioinformatics & “Omics”

 UPV/EHU

University Master

Bioinformatics provides tools to analyse the “Big Data” generated by advanced molecular biology technologies, such as massive sequencing data. Nowadays, there is high demand for talented scientists at the crossroads of biology, statistics, and computer science, and so this degree will provide students with the ‘omics knowledge and informatics expertise needed to make them able to develop bioinformatics-based technical solutions in academia or companies.

Bioinformatics and “Omics” is a EHU Own Degree organized by Genomic Resources research group from the Dept. of Genetics, Physical Anthropology and Animal Physiology. The degree will be taught in 2016-2017 course jointly with the University of Bordeaux (UBx), leading to an International University Master certificate.

In order for a student to be awarded the degree, 60 ECTS credits must be completed:

  • The first semester (30 ECTS), consisting of the acquisition of basic skills in bioinformatics, will be taught at the UBx.
  • The second semester (30 ECTS), focused on the application of bioinformatics to “omics” data generated by high-throughput sequencing will be held at the UPV/EHU. It involves 16 ECTS taught courses followed by an individual research project of 14 ECTS.

Those students at the UPV/EHU University Master willing to continue their specialization in Bioinformatics will have the option to enroll at the University of Bordeaux for the 60 ECTs of the second academic year of the Master «Bioinformatique», and thus they will also obtain the Official Master of Bordeaux certification.
