Mikel Aguirre has a degree in Biochemistry from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). His academic work was related to the identification of paratuberculosis susceptibility genes in cattle, under the supervision of Dr. Andone Estonba. He also holds a M.Sc. (1 year) in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from the Complutense University in Madrid, Spain (UCM). He had been working with biological databases at the National Biotechnology Center (CNB) for over 5 months. Next, he has an M.Sc. (1 year) in “Molecular Biology and Biomedicine” which was jointly imparted by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the University of Cantabria (UC).
He is currently working on a PhD entitled «Unravelling the bay of Biscay planktonic biodiversity by massive parallel sequencing», under the supervision of Dr. Andone Estonba and Dr. Iratxe Zarraonaindia. His PhD project will be based on analysis of amplicon sequencing (16S rDNA), metagenomics and metatranscriptomics of estuarine microbial communities.
