I am PhD in Biological Sciences (PhD title: “Relationships between mesoscale oceanographic structures and zooplankton communities in the Bay of Biscay”; AZTI-Tecnalia, July 2007). After a postdoctoral stay at the Molecular Ecology and Fisheries Genetics Laboratory at Bangor University (MEFGL, UK; January 2008- December 2009) where I applied molecular markers to evaluate the predation impact on early life stages of fish, from March 2010 to July 2015, I worked at the Genetics Department of the University of Basque Country (UPV-EHU) as a molecular ecologist.

My main research line is the application of traditional (microscopy) and molecular (DNA based) methods to address questions in marine and fisheries ecology (mainly plankton biodiversity and food web assessment). Currently (since July 2015) I work as Environmental technician and EU project manager at the Environmental Studies Centre (Centro de Estudios Ambientales; CEA), part of the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council.

I have participated in > 20 national and international research projects resulting in > 20 peer reviewed papers (Web of Science author search: “albaina a*”; ResearchGate «Aitor Albaina») and > 30 communications to conferences.
